Butterfly & Bee Frenzy

Sep 13, 2017 12:13

A few mornings ago, MyJeff and I relaxed on the back deck enjoying our coffee and the gentle weather. I glanced over the deck railing to check on the status of the just-opening sedum blooms. This is what I saw:

I think they're Painted Ladies.

Sedums are wonderful for pollinators. We really should get some ourselves.

Yes, indeed. They certainly do appear to be Painted Ladies. And, when we looked up both Painted Ladies and Red Admirals, we found that their Latin names both start with Vanessa. Thus they are, at least, related.

So . . . Painted Red Admiral Ladies . . . ? ;-P

I love these sedums--even if they are pink. They were a birthday gift from MyJeff's "foster sister" to me a few years ago.

It always surprises me that Painted Ladies aren't more in-your-face colourful - with a name like that.

Excellent point. Although they have an interesting combination of colors and markings, the colors ARE quite modest compared to some. Maybe the namer(s) simply couldn't think of anything else interesting-sounding.

Well done, Jon of the eagle eye! Apparently, the sedum is generally a favorite of pollinators. Yesterday MyJeff commented that we've only seen the Painted Ladies (as Changeling72 identified the butterflies) feasting on the blooms with the bees, but no swallowtails or monarchs or even the little white butterfly I'll have to look up to name. We still see the whites flitting around the yard, but perhaps the others have already headed south for the winter?

Aren't they lovely? Nature gives us so much beauty.

Yes nature does have so much beauty to it even weird kinds of it but what's really sad is how a lot of things both with human interaction or even just from space destroys only for it to come back in an odd state.

The destruction of beauty--especially if caused by humanity--is certainly a sad thing. I'm not sure to what you refer as coming back in an odd state, though. I've seen the regrowth/recovery be DIFFERENT than originally, but not really all that "odd". Did you have a specific example?

Also, when some of nature's beauty is destroyed, I try to put a little back. Maybe plant a flower, or donate to one of the Greater Good website causes. Do you click to give?
