Hoping to get a better picture of race in Britain, I'm poking around in the Commission for Racial Equality Web site. It gives an overview of ethnicity in the UK, broken down by region, and explains the definitions being used, and includes a timeline of immigration to the UK ( Read more... )

So Glasgow is more white than Cardiff? Wonder what Torchwood Cardiff would look like...

As a former non-white resident of Cardiff, it always amuses me how Cardiffians and Welsh people boast/moan about the ethnic mix of Cardiff, and then under the same breath boast about its dominance as the capital city of Wales.

I think the "lack" of POC of Cardiff can be partly explained by the sheer lack of POC actors/actresses in Cardiff - most of them go to London ASAP for obvious reasons. And it takes a while to draw them back.

Not having seen Torchwood beyond the first episode, Suzie Costello was non-white?

Yep - in fact, Jon and I had seen Indira Varma in a fairly dreadful Indian movie, Kama Sutra (she's in Bride and Prejudice, too).

Suzie gets to pwn her former teammates FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE! in the episode They Keep Killing Suzie, which also features Yasmin Bannerman (Jabe from The End of the World) as a very amused police detective. It's worth tracking down.

Ah. Indira's half-Indian, which explains why I didn't twig at first.

"According to the article, a 1997 study found that "half of all black men born [in the UK] who are currently in a relationship have a white partner". That could mean that, while (for example) Mickey and Rose might look progressive to a US audience used to de facto TV segregation, they might look comparatively unremarkable to British viewers."

Yeah, can confirm how that appears to the US audience. I was delighted to see this. Not at all common to see on TV over here.
