And if you do have black characters -- just because they're there -- how do you indicate that in prose, I find myself wondering.

Ben blew my head off, all those years ago, by writing the "big decisions" scene in the Remembrance novelisation from the Black guy's POV and referring to the Doctor as "the white man".

Indeed. But my main character is white.

Or is he? Much confusion results.

It's probably not so bad, because I want a lead who actually pays attention to such things, unlike most of my protagonists (it's a clue). Which still leads to the racial make-up of this group of 8 or so characters jammed into hell together, reacting badly.

(I read an essay once pointing out that, by accident or design, Harry Potter's year at Hogwarts is a microcosm of Britain in startling accuracy -- not just ethnic percentages, but English, Welsh and Scottish; urban and rural, and even religious background. All quite interesting.)
