How it works
• Characters who die are marked +.
• Characters of colour are bolded.
• The Doctor and companions (Donna, Jack, Rose, Martha, Mickey, Sarah) are omitted.
• Supporting characters must have at least one line to appear in the list.
• Characters are listed once for each story in which they appear.
• Aliens whose "race" is unclear (eg Davros) are omitted.
• The various newscasters are omitted, as are the two Nodes from Silence in the Library.
Why it matters
A tally like this isn't a magic litmus test which will tell us if the show is racist or not. It answers only a couple of very specific questions: what proportion of the cast are POC, and are they preferentially killed off, as per the long-standing cliche of TV and movies?
A note on resurrection
Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead is a bit tricky because almost the entire cast die, then are brought back to "life" - does that count as character deaths, or not? I think the intention is that the characters survived, albeit in a new form. I'll do the numbers both ways and see if there's any difference. Similarly, as Jenny returns to life, I haven't counted her "death".
