Over at deadbrowalking, delux_vivens ponders making a Who fanvid to the song Curious White Boy by Cree Summer (read the lyrics - they are scorching!) Holy crap, maybe it's a good thing after all that the Doctor never showed any romantic interest in Martha!

This got me thinking about my little grumble about the satirical manifesto My Rights as a Straight White Woman in Read more... )

I'm appalled by your experience, and that's a deliberate choice of words. :-(

Something I'm learning is that poetry and lyrics can get across an idea, an experience, with an incredible power and speed that page after page of prose could never match. Clueless White Boy, and also mary hope lee's on not bein, are like a bucket of ice water to the head.

"Curious White Boy" has nothing to do with random sexual attractions and interests. It's about sexual fetishization and exploitation of Black women as a deeply embedded facet of Western culture. And the way in which people-- especially white people-- choose to ignore it, view it with lurid fascination and tacit approval, or blame black women for responding to it with anything less than joyful acquiescence.

No argument from me - the men in the song are deliberately pursuing Black women. I may not think the song is really much of a match for Doctor Who, but my gods does it get its point across.
