78) A green beverage (mojito? Limeade?) at the beach secundus_cast August 5 2012, 20:36:21 UTC
Time: Pre-"Secundus"
Notes: This one's the first of two drabbles inspired by my new interest in the "Bioshock" series. Originally, the drink was going to explicitly be ADAM, but I wasn't sure what color ADAM actually was (you really only "see" it when the Little Sisters are sucking blood out of people). So I went with a generic drink that possibly has ADAM's addictive properties. Fortunately for the average person the street, it doesn't matter to Alice if a monster happens to be human-shaped -- she'll take care of it just the same. (If the guy had been honest about it, though, she would have left him alone -- that would have constituted fair warning to people. You CAN do experiments like this in Secundus as long as you're open about what you're doing, and the possible side effects ( ... )

Notes: This is the other drabble inspired by "Bioshock." I was searching for prompts to do, saw this one, and remembered the lighthouse from the first game. Bam, drabble. As you can see, I don't have high hopes for the Secundus-verse version of Rapture. I mean, place went to hell with just relatively NORMAL people there. With TOUCHED added to the mix. . .

“Rapture? That’s an odd name for a lighthouse.”
“Oh, that’s not the lighthouse,” Lewis said. “That’s the name of the city beneath the lighthouse.”
Victor looked up from the atlas, curious. “An underwater city?”
“Yes - it was intended to be something like Secundus. A safe haven for ‘the best and the brightest.’ I don’t think it succeeded, though.”
Victor frowned. “Why not?”
“Well, Ryan was fond of saying that the city would advance science without that pesky ‘morality’ getting in the way. . . .”
Understanding dawned. “There’s nothing but rubble down there now, is there?”
“No one’s returned to tell us differently.”

Notes: This one was inspired by a prompt at charloft about providing pictures of your greatest fear. One of Victor's big ones is a fear of total, blinding darkness. After writing that reply, I felt the need to expand on it in fic form. You might consider it a companion of sorts to last year's 87) Author's choice: nightmare.

It was black, it was all black, there was nothing to see absolutely nothing he couldn’t even see his own body it was like he didn’t even exist but he knew he existed, knew it from the crushing pressure of the dark on his chest even as the world stretched out to infinite terrifying black around him -
“Victor!”
His eyes snapped open to see his wife leaning over him. “The dream again?” she whispered.
Victor nodded, and took a deep breath as she pulled him into a hug. Seeing the sun after that was nice -
But seeing her was better.

Notes: I wanted to do something about Alice and Allison, exploring their relationship a bit. I've always imagined that Allison gets along very well with her mother-in-law, despite being her opposite. Being friendly and honestly having no trouble at all with how Alice lives her life helps a lot. Allison is honestly one of the most genuinely sweet people a person could meet. I need to do more with her.

Alice had thought she wouldn’t like Allison Laidlaw.
After all, the two women couldn’t be more different. Allison was the type of girl who enjoyed homemaking and didn’t want to get a job. One of her favorite activities was stitching samplers. And she’d never touched a weapon in her life. Alice was the primary breadwinner in her family, hated decorative sewing, and never went anywhere without her Vorpal Blade. She and Allison were like night and day.
And yet - Allison was friendly, open, and completely without prejudice. And she genuinely respected everything Alice did. Who wouldn’t like someone like that?
