Poor Abin, so wanting his son to be part of his life, but Amon not being able to due to his own greed. At least Abin knew who the next Captain should be.

“Out of respect for his father.” Hal sighed and emptied the wine bottle into their glasses. “I only hope I won’t regret it.”))___So he acknowledged that the son was the captain's weakness; but by allowing the son to live-he now becomes Hal's weakness/threat. And he becomes a threat to every man on the ship when the son wants revenge. Logic would dictate that the needs of the many outweight the needs of the one--and if by killing the son the safety of the entire crew and those they cared for were assured_well, obviously they should have killed the son.
