I enjoyed this very much. Many years ago, when my daughter was in high school, we hosted a lovely young lady from the Orkney Islands for a week before they went off to a Girl Scout camporee. We had planned activities for every day, and the day I was planning to take them to our local beach (on Long Island Sound) it was cool and drizzly. I told Ruth that I was so sorry we didn't have good weather. She said where she came from, this was definitely beach weather. I still have a lovely vase she gave me, made of Caithness glass. It was nice to read about Orkney and their weather.
Thank you. You'll have to go there one day! I've only been to Orkney once, on an archaeological tour with eight other people, including 5 delightful Americans. The islands are blue and gold, green and silver - because all the Atlantic weather systems cross very fast which also makes for remarkable skies. And of course being so far north the sun hardly sets in summer. It's light nearly all night. But even in mid July, when the archaeological excavations start to open again, it was freezing cold one minute, and pleasantly warm the next.
