Odd, the flaws as mentioned don't seem to have much to do with a story about her decision whether to stay with her husband for his remaining time (and what does HE want?).

So maybe it's a parody of early SF, instead of a serious story?

I don't think the story is meant as a parody. (It's available for free at tor.com if you'd like to read it.)

To me, the flaws in the story are different aspects of the same thing: the story feels contrived, particularly the central conflict.

I would have voted for underground bunkers but that ends with being all about the blue-skinned platinum blondes and cannibalism and that's just like US high school... :D (I thought I had a Morlock picture)
