"On a Red Station, Drifting" by Aliette de Bodard was easily my favorite of nominated novellas.[1] It is part of de Bodard's Xuya universe - I've read a few stories set in this universe, but I don't really know much about it and it's not necessary to do so. Agree on your point #1. The "rich and expansive" world was one of this novella's chief attractions for me. I didn't have the problem you did with the finale. May be a philosophical divergence. I do make room for intrusions from outside the main plot if not too intrusive, and I think Honored Ancestress's collapse is not very intrusive, as she is in frequent communication with Quyen and Linh, and her collapse is hardly a surprise.

Overall, though, I thought the novellas a weak field and this book on the weak side for a winner. (And yes, far too many typos and other stumbles. Be a friend to your friend. Tell her to get an editor. Or a new editor;)
