Today's topic at 14valentines is reproductive rights and motherhoodI got mixed up and thought the topic for today was something else, so I don't have anything in particular to say about this; I'll just note that as someone who has never wanted children, reproductive rights are incredibly important to me personally, and I feel that every woman should have the ( Read more... )

Oh, I really enjoyed reading these quotes. It's been ages since I read Pharr's book and I forgot all the brilliance within. Some of these I'd never read before. Thanks!

I so meant to sign up for this when you posted about it months ago. I had intended to write an essay that has been in my head for years about the experience of being a foster and then adoptive mother. Oh well, maybe I'll write it some day!

Glad you enjoyed! It was cool going back and reading that Pharr quote and remembering all the gender stuff I used to think about in college. I miss it sometimes.

Ooh, I hope you do eventually write that essay -- I'd be interested in reading it. :-)

as someone who has never wanted children, reproductive rights are incredibly important to me personally, and I feel that every woman should have the same right to choose that I have.

I've never wanted children either, and although I still feel that society is conditioning women into thinking they have to have kids, I'm glad that I have the right to choose.

Also, I love Jeanette Winterson.

*nods* Societal conditioning is a whole separate battle, isn't it? But thank god we have the right to choose, as long as we can deal with all the relatives that make us feel guilty (or is that just my family? *g*).

Jeanette Winterson is a goddess.

It definitely is. I think I'm lucky that none of my family particularly like kids so there's no pressure ;)

I saw this article on CNN today and found it rather refreshing!

I really loved these two:

"Each of us wages a private battle each day between the grand fantasies we have for ourselves and what actually happens." -- Cathy Guisewite

"Stop looking for rational explanations of the absurd. That is what maturity means. Accepting the absurd. Not with resignation, but with love." -- Madeleine L'Engle, The Love Letters

Hee, I like those too. The Guisewite one always brings a wry smile to my face.

Oh, these are nice, and I wasn't familiar with any of them. I love the L'Engle ones in particular.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked! I have so much admiration for Madeleine L'Engle -- she was such a wise and wonderful writer.
