We have our set of Bob Books poised -- Sammy is going to be ready for them within a month, 6 weeks at the outside, but I'm waiting for just the right time. :)

Eva read the first one or two of the first set at 6. Before she began, she didn't know how to read CAT. Partway through those books, everything just clicked... we never did finish that first set and she was reading fluently within a couple of months of that.

Oh yes, BOB books are wonderful! My 5 year old daughter's Montessori school used them. She is reading, thanks to them, and we have the 1st set at home too. She is now in public kindergarten (the Montessori school was just preschool) and I'm waiting for them to figure out she can read and needs a bit more challenges than the take home readers.... a (picture of a spider)....
