"Time Falls Away"
He had never seen her look as beautiful as she did tonight.
Every moment of her wedding day up until that very moment was now firmly engrained into his memory. The first time he saw her in her wedding dress, just moments before he walked her down the aisle… the smile on her face as she and Jimmy said their ‘I do’s… and the vision of her here, swaying gently in his arms to the music. Perhaps it wasn’t the wedding he had expected, perhaps he had seen a few of the roles reversed in his mind… but this was how it should be. For her.
She had never looked this happy, this at peace, this free in her life. Chloe’s smile had always had the ability to light up a room. But the way she looked tonight… there was no denying that something had changed for the better inside her.
Glancing down at her in his arms, it hurt him just as much as it pleased him to see her this happy, because he knew how she had gotten here. When Chloe’s entire world had been fading all around her, her memories getting ripped from her faster than she could handle, Clark had made a decision… one that would likely come back to haunt him in the near future, as most of his big decisions tended to do.
With Jor-El’s aid, he was able to restore Chloe’s memories of her friends and family. She was able to recognize her fiancé again, and she even looked at Clark as if she’d never forgotten one single thing about him. But if she only knew…
That night, her memories were restored. All but the ones that involved Clark’s true identity.
It wasn’t an easy decision for him to make. Jor-El liked to remind him that his actions always have consequences, and there wasn’t a doubt in Clark’s mind that his decision to withhold some of Chloe’s memories would come at a cost. But when he had looked down at her small, delicate body lying on that slab of ice in the fortress, he knew instantly what he had to do.
He thought back and could pinpoint so many moments in their friendship where she was the one protecting him. Always protecting his secret. Chloe had called him a hero numerous times before, but it was she who had earned the title. She never faltered. She was always covering for him. And that was both her strength and her weakness, because it was what had led her to the fortress that night.
Brainiac. He had done something to Chloe, infected her mind and worked slowly at controlling her life. He was seeping away every memory that she had, and it was because of Clark that Brainiac was even able to do that to her.
All of the horrible things that have happened to Chloe since she found out Clark’s secret could have been avoided. She could have been living this life all along. Instead, she was fighting for her life every other week standing by Clark’s side, never living a life that was her own.
He felt like no matter what he did, he was letting her down in some way. She deserved so much better than the life she had being Clark’s secret-keeper and best friend. She deserved to be with a man like Jimmy, who could show her the love that she had never gotten from him.
Chloe was right. Clark had blown any chance he could have ever had with her a long time ago. By the time he had realized what he had been so blind to all those years, she had moved on to another man. Jimmy. The man she would one day marry.
And that’s why he had to stop her. She would gladly put Clark’s secret before her own happiness, but he couldn’t stand by and let her do that anymore. They would always be the best of friends. She would always be his first kiss, his Spring Formal date, his favorite Prom Queen.
But now, being whisked back onto the dance floor by her husband and pulled out of his arms, he knew she would always be the girl that got away.
