Take Me Out The Ball Game

Chloe squinted at the bright sun above.  “Ugh.”  She groaned.  “I wish I’d brought my sunglasses.”

She felt a swift breeze, and in an instant, a pair of sunglasses appeared on her face, at the same time a baseball cap mysteriously arrived on her head.

“Thanks, Clark.”  She said, smiling at her best friend.  “But I could have walked up to the gift shop and bought stuff myself, you know.”

Clark smiled back at her.  “I’m just glad that you were able to come with me.  It’s been a crappy year, and these tickets were a gift from Dad.  I…I didn’t think I could handle coming by myself.”

“Hey.”  Chloe said, reaching over and patting Clark on the hand. “I think this is exactly the type of situation that best friends were made for.  And besides, back when we lived in Metropolis, Dad and I used to go to Monarchs games all the time.”

“I always thought that you hated sports.”

“I don’t have ESPN in my blood, no, but I don’t mind a good game.  It’s especially fun when you’re here, like we are now, watching it in person.  There’s something about the feeling of the sun shining down, the roar of the crowd, the zest of the peanuts, the crunch of the Cracker Jack… it’s so much better in person without commercials, and annoying announcers telling me what I should think of the last play.   Take me out to the ballgame, for sure, but I’ll tune out if it’s on television.”

“Yeah.”  Clark said, pointing down at the field, “Because on TV you miss the chance to see people dressed up running around the baseball diamond, dressed up like parts of a sandwich, trying to win prizes.”

“Give me a soccer mom dressed up as luncheon meat any day over a commercial for a cellphone carrier.” She laughed. “Just relax, Clark, and enjoy the game.”

“Okay.”  He nodded.  “I’m thinking about getting something to eat.  Anything sound good?”

“I’ve been known to equate men who bring me Cracker Jack to knights in shining armor…but let me cover this one, okay?   To pay you back for the gear.”  She adjusted the Wolverine baseball hat on her head.

Clark’s super speed was no match to the line at the concession stand.  By the bottom of the next inning, however, he had returned with Cracker Jacks for Chloe and a hot dog for him.  He finished the hot dog in record time.

Chloe shook her head.  “Some days I just don’t know what to do with you.”

“Chloe.”  Clark smiled.  “Just focus on the game.”

“We’re in between innings.”

“Then focus on whatever they’ve got going on down on the field.  What is it now, a roach race?  Dogs catching balls out in the midfield?”

“Nope.”  Chloe pointed to the scoreboard.  “It’s the kiss cam.”  The sounds of ”Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer sounded through the speakers.

“Kiss cam?”

“The camera goes around the crowd and focuses on couples.  People kiss and they put that on the jumbotron.”

“That’s ridiculous!”

“And just how many baseball games have you been to, Clark?  Seriously, how can you not know what the kiss cam is?”

“I actually pay attention to the game, that’s how.”

Chloe’s response was lost as the crowd around them began to chant “Kiss!  Kiss!  Kiss!”  Chloe felt her cheeks burn as she looked to the jumbotron for confirmation.   Sure enough, she was on the kiss cam.  With Clark.

Her history kissing Clark was mired with heartbreak- her own.  At that moment, Chloe wanted nothing more than for Clark to kick on his super powers and speed them away from the Wolverines Baseball game.  But that wasn’t an option.  So as she’d done many times before, Chloe took matters into her own hands, and kissed Clark.

This kiss was different.  Clark responded, and quickly the kiss grew deeper.  He pulled her into his arms, holding her close.  Her sunglasses and hat fell to the ground, as they became involved in  a world that was only their own.  It was only the cat calls of the crowd that forced them apart.

The kiss cam was gone, but the spell was not broken.  Clark was blushing, his cheeks bright red as Chloe was sure her own were as well.   For the rest of the game, they didn’t talk.  Instead, they tried to focus on the game, each lost in their own thoughts.   After the seventh inning stretch, Clark rested his hand gently over Chloe’s.   Neither moved until the game had come to a close, with the Wolverines winning the game.

_____

They walked out of the stadium, hand in hand.  It was a strange new closeness, but neither one of them objected.  They walked far enough away, several blocks, until the crowd had died down.  And then Clark picked Chloe up into a fireman’s carry and super sped them back to Smallville.

Clark came to a stop outside of the Talon.  He set Chloe down on the pavement gently.

“So, um, thanks for coming to the game with me today.”

“It was awesome.”  She said nervously.   This was crazy.  She was at a loss for words talking to Clark, which was something that had never happened before.  She’d always been able to talk to him, about anything and everything.  Why should a kiss change everything?  They’d kissed before, but this was the first time that the kiss felt so…electric.  In that moment, everything had just felt perfectly in sync.  She wanted to do something, to feel that way again, but was afraid that things wouldn’t be the same.

“So um, yeah.”  Clark said.  “It was a good game, huh?”

“It was awesome.  I loved it.”  she took a deep breath, and tried to be brave one more time.  “I mean, it’s a good thing that we’re such good friends, right?  Otherwise the whole kiss thing would…”

Chloe’s words were lost as Clark’s lips covered her own.  In an instant, they were in the same blush of electricity that had covered them at ballpark.  Chloe kissed him back, drawing him nearer.  They broke apart moments later; and Chloe amusedly realized that Clark had her pinned to the brick of the Talon’s back wall.  They’d gone from a kiss to a full out make out session in minutes flat.

“I don’t want to be just friends.  I feel like..a lot more than friends.”  Clark said breathlessly.

“Yeah, me too.” Chloe nodded.

“So we’re doing this?”

Chloe kissed him in response.

________

Quite a bit later, Chloe climbed the stairs to the Talon apartment.  She was crashing with Lois overnight, and would drive back to school in the morning.

Lois took a look at her cousin as Chloe entered the apartment.  Chloe’s hair was mussed and her lips swollen.  “So I take it that you had a good time at the game?” She teased with a smile.  She was happy for her cousin.

“Baseball,”  Chloe said with a grin, “was very, very good to me.”

The End.
