What is a minor character? I suppose everyone has their own ideas about which characters are minor and which are major, but let's review a few definitions ( Read more... )

So just to clarify, how do we deal with:

- a character who *was* a lead, but only for a short amount of time and/or tends to be marginalized in the fandom? (ie: Doggett and Reyes on The X-Files, Sinclair on B5)

- a show like Doctor Who with its constantly revolving door cast, some of whom may be leads at one point and supporting at another?

Just to clarify. :-)

(And yeah, I know, why can't I ask the *easy* questions? ;-) )

The way I'm dealing with those are, comment on the welcome post and tell me why you think your chosen character is minor. If it sounds like a good reason, you may post.:)

As for DW, I think any character who is not the Doctor would qualify.

Even companions? Or would it depend on, say, how much fic there is out there for the companion in question? :-)

I leave that up to your discretion. If you think about it, the Doctor is really the POV character.

I suppose Cole wouldn't count for Charmed -- he's in the opening credits. How about these?

Battlestar Galactica - Anders
Heroes - Mr. Muggles
Criminal Minds - Penelope Garcia

I don't know about BSG or CM, but Mr. Muggles definitely.

Actually, I'd consider Cole a minor character because the show was told from the sisters' points of view.

I'd definitely categorize Garcia as minor - we've had one ep focusing on her and her backstory, but outside of that we usually just get a glimpse or two of her. Not nearly the amount of face time Hotch/Morgan/Reid/Prentiss/Rossi get.

Then she is considered minor.:)

I think characters like Sandra, Linderman, Hiro's father (forgot his name), Claude, Thompson or one of the many powerholders who weren't on very long and got shit in the way of development (say, like, Charlie, Heidi, etc.) would count.

I completely agree with that.:)

Despite their being in the credits, I'd call Sid and Adam minor characters. Sid especially, despite it being an ensemble cast we only see him once - maybe twice an ep if there are multiple cases - in autopsy. Adam's a little more questionable b/c the PTB have given him more face time the last two eps, then again he wasn't in the prior two at all.

I'd also toss in the rotating detectives (Maka, Scagnetti, Angell) and coroners (Peyton, Evan Zao, Pino) that we saw more than once.

Then by all means, they fit the criteria.:)

Flashpoint: Kira - the receptionist - is not a major part of the team. We see bits of her now and then.

I'm also inclined to include Lewis, Spike, and Wordy in the list. While they are member of the team, we don't see a lot of focus on them. (Most of the focus and plot seems to center around Ed, Greg, Jules, and Sam.)

All right, then. If those characters don't get much focus, then I'd definitely include them.:)

Oh so glad I found this comm! So Spike from Flashpoint fits the bill? *dances*

If he's not a main focus character and doesn't get much airtime, then i say yes.
