Breathe.
The word repeated itself in Vin's mind over and over again as she laid there on the street, curled into a ball, shivering hard as water soaked through her clothing, chilling her despite the magic burning her alive from the inside out. Rainwater choked her with each gasp, sending her body into spasms as her lungs rejected it. It almost felt like she was drowning and Vin had to struggle to hold back waves of sheer, mindless panic, had to struggle to keep her mind working through the agony but it was so hard. It hurt so much. Dimly the thought entered her mind that she was dying, alone and in agony, in this storm.
Panic flared again, threating to steal what little breath she could draw in.
Breathe! It took a long time to register in the tortured girl's mind when Granny spoke to her and she managed to open her eyes, squinting past a blur of tears at her. Then something fell across her, something heavy and warm and relatively dry and Jenn was there. The reality of a world outside the pain suddenly spun back to her and ( ... )

She was aware of being placed on the ground again, and of the rain stopping abruptly, and opened her eyes slightly to see John looking down at her. She opened her mouth to say something, to tell him what she saw but nothing came out but a small, pained sound and she clamped her teeth together again. Who had she been looking for? Who had she found? Every time she tried to think back all she could remember was looking into that endless darkness, the shadows that threatened to rip the courage and strength from her heart ( ... )

John took a breath and brushed Vin's hair out of her face, "Deep breaths, Vin. Stay with me all right? I'll try to do this as quickly as possible."
He closed his eyes and focused on his inner sight. He needed to find the curse and snap it's power off. He'd done it so many times before, it shouldn't be hard to do again. It took longer than he thought it would, longer than he wanted Vin to suffer. But, eventually, he found the source of the curse and like snipping a thread he forced his concentration on severing its ties to Vin.

"Breathe with me." She instructed after John told Vin to take deep breaths, She-Hulk slowly breathing in and out, her hand shaking ever so slightly to remain gentle, the fury of who had done this to the other woman pushing her dangerously close to rage again.

Once it was over John was sweating and he looked exhausted. He wiped his brow, falling back hard and taking some deep breaths. "That was stronger than I anticipated."

The thought sunk in slowly and she opened her eyes, staring up at the ceiling. She was at the hotel, safe, because people had come to help her. All she had done was make a meager call for help and Jenn had rushed out to get her and bring her to John, somebody who barely knew her yet had risked himself to help her. Even a complete stranger had shown up, Vin made a point to remember the old woman's face in case she ever ran across her again. Vin owed her a debt.
She glanced toward John. She had been going to find someone out in the rain, somebody whose name and face she couldn't bring herself to remember for some reason. Had he found anything? She had to tell him but... she found that thought slipping away. Even the dull pain that remained of the curse was a relief, and she suddenly felt so tired....
Slowly, Vin's eyes closed and she drifted off into a deep, if at least natural, slumber.

He glanced back at Jenn when she was done, "You're welcome. I feel partially to blame. When we were looking in on Thomas she found a piece of hair and suddenly took off without saying why." He wiped his brow again, he felt cold and shaky but otherwise fine. "I'll be okay though."

Jennifer felt a blush creep across her own cheeks, cold as they were from being out in the rain. She looked down at the towel in her hands. What was she doing? She had been with Neal just the other night, and she cared for him! What was she doing kissing John, or feeling something flop in her stomach when she did it?!
Taking a step back, she knew her cheeks must have been bright, as hot as they felt, and she looked down at Vin again, grateful for a reason to make a quick exit. "I...I should go. Vin needs to get warm."

Right, Jenn was leaving. John shook himself out of his thoughts, making note of the bright red she had turned as she stammered out an apology and a reason to leave. "Right," he hesitated, "be careful....Jenn."
