Ice clinked in his glass. A drop of condensation ran down the side, making a dark, wet circle on his gloves.
“Come on, Roy. You wanna see another picture.”
“No, I can honestly say that I don't.”
Hughes pouted for a moment, but his smile quickly reformed. “You should have seen Gracia this morning. The way the sunlight hit her face, I swore I'd woken up next to an angel! She was making dinner, and cut herself...” Roy tuned him out. If he heard anything else about his girlfriend, he was going to set something on fire. “... even when she's in pain she's cute!”
Roy rubbed his temples, but stayed quiet.
When Hughes noticed how quiet Roy was, he stopped- something was bothering his friend. But as usual, his face was a mask, and Hughes couldn't read the emotions underneath.
When he noticed that Hughes was staring at him, his hand quivered in frustration. It broke his heart that Maes didn't feel this utter, desperate need that ate at his insides, the desire that tore at his brain. He wanted a family and Roy couldn't give it to him. Not a day went by that the alchemist didn't think about what could never be between him and the man who held his heart.
“Hey, Roy, I went out and got a ring. I'm gonna ask her to marry me, and I want you to be our best man.”
His hand stilled.
“Okay, Maes.”
