The Year in Review

Jan 03, 2007 23:23

It's January and time to take stock, I suppose.

In many ways, I'm most proud of the stories I wrote this year. Looking at some of the stories I wrote way back in 2003-04 and then lookiing at what I produced this year, it's clear to me at least that I've improved. I can hardly stand to look at some of my earliest stuff.

This year I've tried to break ( Read more... )

Thanks for dropping by. My LJ is a dusty, neglected place for the most part, but it's nice to have an occasional visitor. You mentioned that you are a teacher. What grade do you teach (assuming you teach K-12)? Teaching is something I've thought about as a second career now that my kids are in school and I don't want to go back to practicing law.

which is how i realized you'd friended me way back in the day without my knowing it. mea culpa, my bad, i am a slacker. but my trips to my own lj have been few and far between, so i hadn't realized you'd stopped by.

Not a slacker, just not as into LJ as others may be. I, for one, lack the ability to figure out the interface to do more than the basics and have absolutely no ability to create the cool icons I see other's sporting. So, maybe I just lurk at LJ for fear of appearing to be a low tech numskull.

i know what you mean about wanting to/trying to break away from writing fan fic and about trying to work on description and theme. i have the same feelings myself, especially since i ( ... )

i've been teaching a course called world cultures to freshmen for the last eight years. well, it was called world cultures up until last year. it is now called world history and geography to fall more in line with new state mandates and course content standards. it now skews more toward a western civ perspective, which i taught in college, than any cultural one ( ... )

I practiced criminal law--I was a public defender--so I can relate to overwork for little pay and powerlessness to fix the system that is often unjust--but despite all of that, I really enjoyed it. Of course, that was before kids and before our family moved to Seattle. Going back to a practice of law is just not feasible on so many levels for me now. But I can tell you that when I went to law school there were many a middle aged woman in my class and they did quite well.

I have the same reservations about teaching that you mentioned--and I guess if I feel I can manage the expectations I might be able to deal with the downsides. One thing that wouldn't bother me so much is a parent threatening to sue. I think it might be "fun" to countersue a parent right back for intentional infliction of emotional distress caused by their crappy parenting and unruly child.
