Special Needs Schools

Does anyone here have a kid with Asperger's Syndrome, Autism or Tourette's?  If so, what school do they go to, and what kind of services are they getting?  Recommendations?

If you must snark, try to come up with something more creative than Ass Burgers. I've already heard that one.

No real help but my bil was dx in grade 4 with tourette's and he just went on a bunch of mess and got extra help during elementary and high school. I'm in bc so things are different up here. Try connecting with some local support groups.

My kid was diagnosed with PDD, NOS (basically Asperger's with a side of talking late), has an IEP with the Snohomish district and is lucky enough to have for his "home" school the "magnet" school in the district for autistic kids. Supposedly the schools on Mercer Island have good programs as well. I can only suggest taking the diagnosis to the school and getting appointments with their psychologist, principal and any "specialists" they have wrt to the diagnosis. Play a part in the IEP and make sure they aren't fuckups. My kid had a real twit of a teacher in 2nd grade and I had to go down there and lean on the principal, the psychologist and the counselor to get her to start doing her damned job.

Of course, the bit about the 2nd grade teacher could happen to anyone. ;)

I am in your city, and my child has ADHD and asperger's. I'm in the Seattle Public Schools. I'm reasonably happy with the accomodations I've gotten in her IEP (weekly speech therapy, push in/pull out for work on school social behavior, afterschool homework help) but I've honestly gotten more done for her privately, through social skills groups and counseling.

However, I have heard DYNAMITE things about CHILD, right on Mercer island, and A.S.D. for kids with autism especially. These are specialty schools, but within the public school system (so, um, free :) ). In fact I believe enrollment is limited to kids who've been kicked out of another school.

Good luck!

Our son has Asperger's syndrome and is in the Autism inclusion program at broadview Thomson elementary in North Seattle. It is a Seattle Public school, and they offer him a LOT of services, but the teacher that runs the program currently is a bit less to be desired. We have had our issues with her, and i suspect, will continue to do so ( ... )
