Beginners Couple Dance Classes

Has anyone had any good experiences with beginning dance classes for couples?

My boyfriend and I would like to take a dance class together. We both have no experience and he definitely has two left feet... I'm thinking maybe salsa, his idea was swing, but if it's a fun class I don't care what type it is. I've googled and yelped and I know there are ( Read more... )

ive known tons of people / multiple couples who all loved Century Ballroom on Capitol Hill. i'm jealous you have a guy who is willing to go with you, where do you find such guys? maybe i should stop picking them up on craigslist y/n?

I can't highly recommend the Century enough, especially if you get to take Swing classes from Mark Kihara. Also, the Savoy Swing Club (http://savoyswing.com) offers beginner courses as well and their teachers are really nice people too. They offer classes at the Phinney Ridge Community Center on Wednesdays and at Sonny Newman's on 85th and Greenwood on Mondays.

What blows my mind is that I'm relatively good looking, sane (for the most part), and have been dancing for over three years - and I'm still single! What's up with that? Besides the fact that everybody I dance with is fifteen years younger than me... (Swing tends to be a "young" crowd - average age of the Seattle Lindy Hop scene is around 22-24)

We loved taking tango lessons from Tony and Ilana. They used to teach at Greenwood Senior Center -- I'm not sure where they are now -- and we learned a lot, had fun, and enjoyed this particular dance (I liked it for the Latin influence; he liked it because it was "tough" to learn).

I'm a fan of more folksy dancing -- square and contra, mostly, where there's no fancy footwork to speak, just a walking step -- not only do I have two left feet, they're big. They're also easy to learn.

There's a good square dance a couple of Monday nights a month at the Tractor Tavern, and contras almost every Thursday night in Lake City and Fridays in Phinney Ridge. http://seattledance.org has more information on them and most other dance events.

The square dance at Tractor kicks ass. The callers do a great job of introducing steps gradually so by the end of the night you're able to do complicated patterns even if you walked in the door with no experience.
