A group of women gave me a ritual very much like this, for menarche and the beginning of womanhood: it was incredibly moving, and monumental. (And the book is spectacular: I read it when I was eleven or so and it has stayed with me.)

I wish I had such an honored ritual to recollect in my memories. But living in middle-class suburbia tends to fade the traditions of such things. I remember my mother hugging me and kissing my forehead and how proud I felt when she bought me my first box of sanitary napkins.
