Abilities

Character's Canon Abilities:

Syrena is a mermaid -- not the friendly Disney kind, but the one found in ominous legends. She's the kind that will drag a man into the water to make a meal out of him, or lure ships off course and into disaster with her hypnotic singing. Her voice is that of a mythological siren's -- just as alluring and deadly. When she sings, it's practically impossible not to be drawn in by her voice and entranced. Her stare is equally as powerful, with a gaze as deep as the ocean itself. Even her beauty is eye-catching; when caught in the moonlight, her tempting features are magnified tenfold. If desire had a corporeal form, it'd probably be this mermaid.

Being a hybrid of fish and human allows Syrena to live in and out of the water. While in the water, she's able to breathe naturally -- water is her element; the sea is her home. However, she can also breathe the air like humans do. In rarer circumstances, if stranded completely on land, she will transform into a typical human shape: her tail will be replaced by a pair of useless legs. Luckily, for a mermaid caught in human form on dry land, she won't dry out and die. The exception is if she is stranded half out of water for some reason -- she runs the risk of suffocating and/or drying out entirely when the sun comes out. In addition to this, mermaids like Syrena are afraid of fire, but find man-made light and song enticing.

Mermaids also possess incredible physical strength. With enough power in their tails, they can propel themselves out of the water like a dolphin, jumping above the sea's surface. Using their claws and fists, they can easily break through solid wooden planks and the hull of a small boat. Their teeth are just as sharp as their claws -- fanglike and frightening whenever they must reveal their true deadly nature. With teeth and claws, it only takes a few seconds for them to strip an arm of all its flesh, or even sever a human into many parts.

A mermaid's kiss is known to grant the lucky receiver the ability to breathe underwater. It will also heal them of any ailments they have to a degree depending on the kiss' power. Mermaid tears are highly sought after for their magical qualities, although the extent of their use is unknown.

Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? N/A

Weapons:

Sharp teeth and claws, powerful physical strength, and a siren's voice. Mermaids can also take long pieces of seaweed and fashion them into lassos, which they'll use to ensnare humans' legs and drag them into the sea. Aside from all that, however, she's completely harmless.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.

Character History: Here & Here

Syrena was a young mermaid from Whitecap Bay, but there's little known of her life before Blackbeard's ship sailed in and disrupted everything. While her sisters were attacking the pirates who wanted to catch them, Syrena decided to save Philip Smith, a missionary of God, from some falling debris. Despite her kindness, she ended up trapped in the reef with the tip of Philip's sword in her tail, pinning her in place. One hissing struggle later, she found herself netted and then trapped inside a glass coffin filled with water.

Inside of this contraption, Syrena began to drown because her supply of oxygen couldn't be replenished. Philip noticed this, and out of compassion for suffering, he argued to open the coffin even a little bit. He went as far as to wedge his Bible between the edge of the lid and the container to let in fresh air.

While going through a jungle in search of the Fountain of Youth, Blackbeard's men accidentally dropped Syrena's coffin and broke it. (They needed her because fresh mermaid tears were integral for the Profane Ritual that would allow them to drink from the Fountain.) She spilled out onto the dry ground, losing her mermaid tail and gaining a pair of useless human legs instead. Blackbeard gave her the ultimatum of walk or die, but she really couldn't walk. She was stubborn, resolved to die for the sake of her pride, but Philip intervened and decided he would carry her onward. After Philip saved her life, Syrena started becoming rather fond of the man. When Blackbeard referred to her as a creature and nothing more, Philip yelled back that she had a name -- even giving her the name "Syrena" himself to force the pirates to view her as a real person.

After reaching some eerie pools of water filled with the corpses of other mermaids, the pirates decided it was time to harvest tears from Syrena. She was strung up half in the water and half out like victims before her, and the pirates demanded that she cry for them. She wouldn't give them any tears, even though she was doomed otherwise. To pressure her even more, the pirates put Philip's life on the line, too. She still refused to cry, and Philip had his throat cut open as punishment, much to Syrena's anger.

She was left to die like that -- but Blackbeard resurrected Philip, who rushed back to her side. In her happiness of seeing Philip alive, Syrena finally shed a tear. That was what the pirates wanted, so they took the tear and Philip with them, leaving her behind again. She believed Philip had set her up and betrayed her; that it had been a simple ruse to get her to cry.

The next time we see Syrena, Philip was returning from the Fountain of Youth, wounded but determined to set her free of her bindings. As soon as she was freed, she fled into the water to search for the magical chalices that were also needed for the Profane Ritual. After finding them, she ended up giving them to Jack Sparrow and told him not to let her tear go to waste in the hands of the pirates. Then she returned to Philip's side, and he begged her to forgive him. She did, and saved him with her special kiss, which healed him of his wounds and allowed him to breathe underwater. They swam away together to an unknown future.

Point in Canon: Near the end of PotC: On Stranger Tides when she forgives Philip, kissing him and dragging him underwater with her.

Character Personality:

First and foremost, Syrena is a mythological mermaid that bears no resemblance to the colorful, clamshell bra-wearing, super friendly Ariel from Disney's film. If anything, she's the opposite: a clever, vicious, wild animal that will eat men alive (literally) using her lovely, alluring looks. For the most part, concepts such as kindness and compassion are lost on her -- they're foreign, unheard of, in mermaid society. When she was kidnapped by the pirates, her sisters didn't care and were quick to abandon her to save themselves. She didn't feel much of anything when she was forced to look at the sundried corpses of other mermaids when Blackbeard was trying to induce her to cry for him. The only discernable emotion she felt was anger toward her kidnappers.

According to Blackbeard, mermaids are tough creatures, and that certainly seems true. To make a mermaid cry is a difficult accomplishment, for a mermaid's heart is as icy as the ocean. Syrena was no exception to this until she met one special human: Philip Smith. He was an unlucky missionary who had been captured by Blackbeard's crew, taken as a prisoner, and was forced along on their hunt for mermaids. It was his fault that Syrena was captured by them, and feeling badly for that, he showed her a great deal of compassion. Without his kindness, Syrena would have died. Even though he was the reason she was in this predicament, she found his kindness was melting the ice in her heart.

Kindness was a strange thing to Syrena -- she didn't even know what it was until she met Philip. Before Philip tried to get the pirates to open her glass coffin, Syrena had never met another human willing to protect someone unlike them. She identified him as a protector from then on; through him, she learned about other concepts like trust.

A mermaid trusting a human is a monumental feat, equivalent to a mouse trusting a cat with its life. Syrena not only learned trust, but also love: a feeling so new and strange that she had no idea how to express it properly. Her love became evident in many subtle ways as her natural disposition changed. It wasn't until Philip's "death" was reversed that she was able to cry -- she cried in happiness, and relief, that he was still alive. She could have easily left Philip behind once he freed her, since she believed he had betrayed her to the pirates, but she decided to forgive him. After curing his wound and granting him the ability to breathe underwater with her kiss, she took him away with her and ultimately saved him. This is something a mermaid would rarely if ever do for a human, of course. (In the interim, she was even willing to help out Jack Sparrow by retrieving the magical chalices for the Profane Ritual.) Although she had suffered because of Philip, she was willing to put all of that aside to live in happiness with him.

So what does all that mean for Syrena's personality? She is an incredibly stubborn, intelligent, and cautious creature, although more docile than the rest of her sisters. Perhaps it's her age that contributes her to being less violent -- willing to save Philip from falling debris in the first place. While her sisters were savagely attacking and killing the pirates, she hadn't been fighting alongside them at all.

Her stubbornness was obvious when the coffin broke and she was stuck in human form, given the ultimatum to walk or die. With useless legs, she couldn't walk, and she decided she'd rather die than obey the pirates. Although Blackbeard was an intimidating man, she displayed no fear and spoke back to him in only contemptuous tones. She wasn't afraid to speak her mind, and when she did, she chose her angry words carefully. If it weren't for Philip, Blackbeard likely would have killed her for defying him, and she would have allowed it for the sake of her pride. Instead, Philip carried her, and Syrena was displeased with "needing" to have help; she bitterly told him she hadn't asked for this. She would have rather died than ask for help from anyone, especially a human. Death is better than showing any weakness, or sacrificing any pride. "Survival of the fittest" dominates her daily life in the rough sea, after all.

In the end, Syrena is somewhat comparable to a tamed lioness. She's half-human and therefore sentient, capable of communicating with others, and has had her wildness curtailed by Philip's kindness. She has learned how to appreciate and reciprocate such warm feelings, allowing her to be civil and care for others slowly but surely. Her animal instincts still govern some of her actions, however. She isn't a mindless, ravenous beast who will drown and eat the first things she sees, but she isn't so morally white that she would never do it. This is one mermaid you shouldn't count on to save your life out of the goodness of her heart, even if it's not as cold and ruthless anymore.

Character Plans: So many plans. Sooooo many plans. What more does Siren's Port need than an actual mermaid to lurk in its waters? Nothing, obviously. But in all seriousness, she'll arrive in Siren's Port naked and sopping wet -- she'll need someone to take pity on her, and assist her. I want her to end up living at the docks, in the actual sea. At some point in time, she should learn how to walk in her human form. She'll have to adjust entirely not only to the influx of people -- mostly humans! -- but also their entire society. Maybe she'll get to eat an unfortunate drunken party boy who falls overboard. She could brush her hair while singing on the docks, attracting people to her? There's a lot to do!

First Person Sample

[When the video turns out, there seems to be water droplets on the lens' surface, distorting the image. Beyond the distortion, there's a flurry of activity -- a squirming figure on the ground of the baseball diamond. It seems to be a humanoid until a large, fishy tail with golden scales slams into view and accidentally knocks the NV over. After turning over a few times, the NV comes to a rest on its side and the picture becomes clearer: there's no sign of a tail, but instead a pair of long, pale legs attached to a stark naked girl that's sopping wet.

That's right, Siren's Port. A wet, naked, utterly startled girl is just sitting there on the ground, partially curled up. Her eyes are very wide, showing her apparent fright, which really isn't that surprising.]

Ah-

[Just then, the NV catches her attention. Syrena has no idea what on Earth this starfish-shaped thing could be, but it's something familiar to fixate on, and the sounds coming from it are peculiar. Grabbing the NV tightly in both hands, she brings it up and close to her face, giving the audience a rather gratuitous view of her naked chest along the way. She accidentally shuts it off soon after.]

Third Person Sample

She's like a fish out of water -- literally. Moments ago she had been swimming with Philip (saving him, actually, and wouldn't her sisters find that an absolute riot?) before she'd been caught in a whirlpool of dizzying proportions. Before she knew what was happening, she landed on land in a place that she can't begin to describe with words. Her unceremonious arrival hurt a lot, but it is much warmer here; the water coating her skin and tail is slowly evaporating. Huddling into herself, shuddering and naked, she watches as her tail is replaced by a pair of human legs that she can't actually use.

Is she going to dry out in the sun this time, in an impossibly foreign place?

Hopefully not.

Her nails dig into her useless legs -- fleshy appendages that are still slightly scaled. Little golden flecks of her scales disappear one by one until only a few remain. Before long, there's no trace left whatsoever of her true form. That's a good thing, perhaps. She'll blend in with the humans easier if she looks like this. But humans are a cruel species, of course, and might try to hurt her, even if some of them are different from the rest. She's met at least one that is... kind. To her.

Philip.

Her chest is stinging terribly.

She curls up tighter, covering her naked form, but she doesn't feel any shame for being naked. Clothes are strange things to her, really, but she wants to hide herself out of feelings of vulnerability. The naked female form is tempting to human men -- it's why mermaids are alluring in the first place, along with their song. If a man comes across her when she's like this... it certainly wouldn't end well.

She'd give up another tear if it meant she'd have Philip's shirt and a way back to her ocean with him.

It's just too frightening to be stranded on land.
