I, for one, am more than happy to welcome back the sun. It means that the long eve of 2005 is finallly over, and we can awake to a new cycle, hoping that things turn out better than they did last time

Thanks to the lastest episode of the Boondocks last Sunday, I got curious and started looking up some things. In the far north (like, say, Norway), scouting parties would be sent into the mountains and bring word of the sun's return -- which makes sense as anything above the Arctic Circle might not see the sun for days, weeks, even months. That would scare the shit out of me too for the first few times it happened. Now we know better, but still -- that didn't stop people from dragging out big logs and partying hard until they all burned up.
I always wondered why there were 12 days of Christmas when it was obviously only one -- now I know!
Finding out that the protestant churches actually banned the holiday for hundreds of years -- THAT was a shocker.
I, for one, consider this day the pivotal hope of this cold, dark time of year. The short daylight hours make me depressed, and the prospect of days getting longer gives me something to look forward to.
I read an article today about a city in northern Alaska, which will not see the sun again until about a month from today. I couldn't handle living in perpetual darkness for as long as some people do. It would drive me to the nuthouse.
I am celebrating today as well! Happy Solstice!! I would like to thank you for recognizing today as a Pagan Holiday. So many of my friends refuse to accept Pagan as a valid religion and it really hurts my feelings. They will acknowldege Christian, Judaism,Muslim and many others as valid faiths but when I mention anything Pagan I am made to feel that it is not a true faith and just a bunch of make-beleive that I am fantasizing about. I never want or push anyone to follow my spiritual path, all I want is it to be validated as much as any other faith. I thank you so much as you have given me the best Solstice gift of all just by acknowledging it and being respectful.
I always feel better once I know that the sun's going to start coming up earlier; it might be in my head, but just knowing the days are supposed to get longer helps. :)
