I wonder that she's really THAT stupid... could it all be a "Tee hee, I'm blonde!" ... but then I think about Miss South Carolina and it all begins to make sense... a horrible frightening sense.

You can always find stupid people and put them in front of a camera.

The real question is, how predominant is that degree of ignorance.

A follow-up question is how relevant it is for the average American to know that Budapest is the capital of Hungary? I mean, I am almost certain not one in ten Europeans could name all the states of the union. And not one in hundred could name the state capitals. Why? Because it's irrelevant to us. Just as it's probably irrelevant to many Americans to know that, say, Denmark is not a Dutch province. Or something.

Yes, maybe your typical American doesn't know the capitol of Hungary.
But she thought EUROPE was a COUNTRY.
And didn't even recognize the name HUNGARY as a country. She had never heard of it.

Yeah, but I thought he pronounced it without a trace of the 'a'. Can't you usually hear that.

But as I said, you can always find an idiot out there.

Yes he pronounced it strangely, but anyone who had heard of the country Hungary would either (1) recognize it from one of a number of kids' jokes, or (2) realize he was pronouncing it wrong.

Either way, the point is she's on a show called Are You Smarter Than a 5th-Grader? ... the actual 5th-grade student knew the answer and she didn't. It's part of the geography lesson ... that you learn at age ten. She should at least know that Europe isn't a country. :/
