Seanan's Pike's Peak keynote speech.

Apr 29, 2015 09:37

So I was just a featured faculty member at the Pike's Peak Writer's Conference (where there was no air). I delivered the Sunday keynote speech. I got a standing ovation, which was pretty awesome. Anyway, here it is for you to read.

Thank you.

Cut-tagged because speeches are long. )

You said all the things and I love you.*

At the first line I thought of Vonnegut and he would have resounded through it even if you hadn't brought it round at the end.

Throughout, I thought of Pratchett, particularly on the difference between nice, fair, and kind.

And neither of those associations drowned out how *you* that entire speech was. You owning your fanfiction. You owning your Disneyland. You addressing poverty and publishing discrimination and petty bickering.

You are amazing.

* Platonically and from a respectable Internet distance.

You're awesome and thanks for sharing.

Selfishness benefits you in the moment. Kindness benefits you in the world.

Yay! I have a new quote for the office white board. Thanks!

Sometimes I feel like assumption of malice is where everything falls down.
