Happy Halloween, Happy New Year.

Happy Halloween, everybody, and Happy New Year's Eve to those of you who share my particular calendar. May the Great Pumpkin smile upon you tonight, bringing you candles which burn brightly, candy that never goes stale, corn mazes as complicated as the twisting choices of the heart, and costumes that are inventive, interesting, and warm enough to ( Read more... )

It is my honor and deep pleasure to have shared the past year with you and (hopefully many!) years to come. As much as I enjoy your professional works, coming here and getting to read your LJ is a delight and I am ever grateful that you are willing to share so much of yourself.

I have not felt the Halloween spirit this year - and it's because I am a very strict diet that doesn't allow for Halloween treats (not even the savory ones I normally make), I can't do any of the Halloween haunts, and the weather has insisted on making me feel like it's been summer.

So tonight I will buy some treats and hope for trick or treaters (we didn't get any last year) and dream Halloween dreams of next year. I too tend to measure time by the month of Halloween, this month has always felt more like endings and beginnings to me then the dead of winter, which only seems to hold endings. I suspect I will feel kind out of time displaced until next year (when I should be able to celebrate with my normal gusto).

So tonight I will think fondly of all the folks for whom tonight will feel like Halloween and know that I too will be able to revel in the celebrations next year. May your Halloween hold all of its old specialness, and I wish you a dollop of my normal Halloween cheer.

Measuring that way makes sense to me. It was the Celtic new year, after all.
