"The boy claimed he was a raven," Rebecca said. She ate curly fries methodically like she hadn't eaten in days. Which might have been the case. "Right there in the tree," she said. "Black feathers in his hair."
"It's a nice day," I said. The warm weather brings madness after so relentless a winter. All life drinks sunlight together. "Some dude, high from last night," I said. "Out in the park like you."
"I didn't see him climb down," Rebecca said. I could still smell the mute evidence of her own altered state. She lit her cigarette on the second try. "I looked back a few times," she said. "He just vanished."
"I bet he flew away," I said. The truth fell from my mouth hidden as a lie. We lived lies, cloaked in secrets and plain sight. "He's probably a raven," I said. "Probably I am, too."
