Everyone Is Stupid Except me

Does nobody understand the meaning of the word "literally" any more? I keep hearing people using it as an intensifier. In yesterday’s newspaper, a columnist (who you would think would know better) wrote of the New Orleans survivors arriving at the Superdome after 12-hour bus rides, "these people were literally the walking dead". Gadzooks. Not only is New Orleans now New Atlantis, not only are they plagued by fires and disease, now they have Zombies!

A woman on the subway yesterday was telling her travel partner, "There was so much noise, I literally went insane". You did not!

A guy at the bus stop, complaining of the heat to someone on his cell phone last week, said "We're literally melting out here". That would explain all the shrieking in mortal agony you could hear in the background.

Why don't these people just tune into the miracle of the word "fuck" and all its myriad forms? The word "fucking" makes a handy syllabic insert ("un-fucking-believable"), carries the same intensive connotation ("I went fucking insane"), and more to the point, you won't be abusing a poor, innocent word like "literally", you morons.

Side-Note to Girl Who Literally Went Insane: You were speaking of how there is no impact on social development in all-boy or all-girl schools because the students can learn how to interact with the opposite gender through television or movies ("I mean, God, it's not like there's any shortage of material out there"). What an awesome idea. I breathlessly await the arrival of a generation of individuals who have learned all concepts of social interaction from "The O.C." You easily qualify as the stupidest person to have entered my personal space today. Die.
