No, I think humanity on the whole tends to be pretty decent in a disaster. What I can see is things turning bleaker as the disaster goes on and on and on, where they are now with TWD. Which is an interesting thing to consider - possibly the showrunners are aware of this overarching thing, that people start out okay and helping each other and then as things get really desperate they get worse, and then it gets better again. But I don't trust these showrunners at all, so who knows. Heh.
I came late to the Walking Dead party (just as they fled the prison, and split up for too damn long). The marathons and DVDs caught me up. What I like is how the zombie apocalypse has made these people more of who they already were/are and at the same time lead them to become more of who they could/will be

Yeah I agree. I thought of soldiers returning from war as well. I've actually met a few people who said they had trouble being back to 'normal' because they found themselves missing the stripped-down realness of living day-to-day like that. I think TWD has the potential to be a war parable. I just don't believe they're intending it that way. Heh.
