O my laptop, why hast thou forsaken me?!

So yesterday, while innocently going to sites I have been to many times before, I picked up a Trojan, a Vundo variant. The only significant change was that I also went to iMeem, which I'd been avoiding the past few weeks because of viruses being reported there, and I only chanced it because it had been reported again as clean. Lemme tell you: NOT ( Read more... )

Have you tried Killbox? I was able to get rid of a previously undeletable virus using that. Might be worth a try before your reformat.

Virus makers need to coated in honey and strapped to a nice, big ant hill. Fire ants. Yes.

I have not yet tried Killbox, thanks for the suggestion. (I have run through the VundoFix apps, everything I can coax McAfee into, Avast! Home Edition...and they all came up clean, but given the current state of my machine, they are all clearly smoking crack. Heh.)

Killbox will delete stuff that is still running, which I guess is sometimes the problem with these things in that you can't shut them down. Good luck - I hope something works!

I REALLY HATE THEM. I mean, it's bad enough having to deal with this stuff at work! Heh.

The fucked up thing is that McAfee caught the Trojan and quarantined it, but then my Windows Update wouldn't stay on no matter how often I turned it on, and I couldn't do manual updates. That's when I knew something was Up. It's been a downhill battle from there.

Hmm, wait a sec. Is your symptom that you can't reach microsoft.com? Because we had that a while back, and if that's your problem I can give you a procedure to get rid of the worm.

No, it was my symptom (sort of, not like the April 1st worm exactly), and I tried that procedure but it's something else, or at least something more. Given the fact the .dlls that this virus is using aren't on any search engines, I'm wondering if it's some wacky new virus. Good times.

That was my experience. I can't figure out what else it could've been, and given the previous warnings, it's hard not to assume that's what it is again. :\

Ugh, viruses are so aggravating. I feel your pain. Try Simply Super Software's Trojan Remover? I thiiiink I had success removing a trojan.vundo with that, a year. I've been hit by trojans twice (torrenting, what can I say) and once I was able to clean my system out, but the other time...not so much.

I will give that one a try, too! Thanks! My antivirus still insists there is nothing untoward going on. *rolls eyes*
