Yes I'm still talking about Serenity.

ETA: I think my LJ cut was messed up the first time. Sorry about any accidental spoilage.

I am incredibly far behind in comments right now. And that looks ro remain the same for a bit as I'm beginning to fill in requests for the Super Serenity Challenge, which is still open! I'm also considering adjusting it a bit so it lasts beyond this ( Read more... )

random thought on the CHUD guy... has he not paid any attention to SF fandom at all? Fen tend to adopt names for themselves. What planet is he living on? D'uh.

Actually, he seems reasonably knowledgable about fannish activities... enough so that he's already read, and responded to Joss:

His original article is here:

(Yeah, when I read Joss's response I'm geeky enough to have gone out and searched for what he was responding to).

Thanks for the links. I'm still a bit 'huh?' with this guy. I admit to not hanging around fan boards much as I find them a bit scary (hmm that could be it!), and I've never felt comfortable at them anyhow. But while I definitely consider myself a fan of Firefly, I'm not a worshipper at the shrine of Joss Whedon (nothing wrong with that, believe me *g*, I've just never seen Buffy or Angel).

I don't get this guy's beef with 'self identifying'; it seems a bit snotty IMO. He writes for what seems to me a pretty 'fannish' website, and calls himself a 'fan' of other Joss shows. Eh, whatever lets you sleep at night dude.

I'm not terribly coherent at the moment, apologies!

The guy continues to write editorials about Serenity which makes me think he's just found something that will get him a lot of attention. I haven't read anything since his second post and I'm much happier that way. heh.

If you are curious to see how it is playing with the non-fans, you may want to read this review. I saw it last week at a preview for bloggers. This one is from a guy who hasn't seen a SF movie since Star Wars.

Ed Morrissey's review (there is a link from this one) is a little spoilery but even more positive.)

It's really great to hear that non-fans are getting so much out of the movie. I think Joss did a fantastic job structuring it so it made sense, and the reviews seem to agree. I'm interested in his sense that Summer Glau was Asian-American though. Thanks for the link.

That CHUD-thing puts me in mind of Pisher, or whoever the hell, who was hell-bent on harshing the buzz of 'Scapers in similar fashion, wandering from board to board peddling the same shit until the mods/admins banned the asshat.

Some people really seem to get a charge out of doing that. I don't get it at all.

Thank you for posting Joss' quotes. I don't think I could possibly love him more right now. (:

Because I think Book was an Operative. I felt the Operative's story was similar to what Book's backstory is, and while I don't think Book was there to capture River, I do think that sentiment that the innocence or guilt doesn't matter still holds true in the deeper parts of his thoughts. Those are the parts he's trying very hard to overlook; overcompensating when faced with the Reavers, for instance.I've seen the "Book was an Operative" theory floated a lot this past week, but nobody seems to be giving much support for it. We know the government guys recognized his name and that his name had power. We know he can shoot. We really don't know anything else. P. suggested that he might have been in Parliament, which I like. But really, there are a whole lot of possible options ( ... )

And at the risk of attracting a thousand million flames, I have to wonder: would we all be so sure Book was an Operative if he wasn't black, like the other two Operatives we've seen?

Other *two* Operatives? I think we've only seen the one (in the movie). If you're thinking of Early, he didn't seem to be an Operative, but rather a freelance bounty hunter.

I was thinking of Early. It's still not clear to me whether he's freelance or not. He doesn't say "Operative" in the episode, just "bounty hunter", but it could go either way. I'd feel on firmer ground if the one hadn't been on the TV show and the other in the movie (there are small but significant canonical shifts between the two). But I think they serve the same role.

If Early really is an operative, he's definitely *pretending* to be a bounty hunter for some reason. He speaks of the reward he'll be getting when he brings in River - "Enough to retire on. Not that I would" - and Simon explicitly asks him if he's Alliance. I can't imagine why he'd go to the trouble of pretending to be something just as deadly as what he actually was.

Oooh, I hadn't seen the newest Joss quote yet, thanks!

I agree with you re: BOok being an operative. I think it's very, very likely.

Hopefully Joss will throw us a bone sometime this week to talk about the box office performance. Heh.
