Okay, question. I was never sure if the Cohens were Ryan's adoptive parents or just foster parents. Was it ever specify? Can anyone give me an educated guess

According to the results I just found using Google, yes they did adopt him. But I really don't remember this happening. I remember them becoming his legal guardians during the first season after they took him in for good. But I don't recall an actual adoption ever being discussed.
Here are the links I found while googling this for you:
Regardless, I don't think it matters if they formally adopted him. It was pretty obvious during the run of the show that the Cohens grew to think of Ryan as their son.
Once you finish the entire story send it to me. And if you really need to trim it down to only 1000 words I'll help you figure out how to condense it. Just let the words flow how they want to flow and we will work it out from there. :)
Yeah, I remember the whole "guardians" thing but that was it, nothing else. I don't really remember "adoption" being talked about, like, ever.
The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to realize that I won't be able to trim it down to just 1k. It's too much. It might not really fit the challenge, but at least I would have written something. *g*
Hmmm. Now, for reasons I don't quite understand, I wanna write the story where they do adopt him and they talk about him taking their name and stuff. God, I'm weird.
I have no idea, but I think I heard that one before. In the show? No, I'm not sure. Nevermind. For me he's always been Scott, so I'm making that one my canon. *g*
