Well, if they were leaving from London, they'd fly out off Heathrow I suppose...Paris, probably Roissy-Charles De Gaulle Airport, Germany maybe Frankfurt Airport, or else from Berlin...no idea about Italy :)

And, yes, SFO is the closest major international airport to Berkeley.

Um, looking down at replies below... If they are going to Berkeley from Europe, then SFO. If they are going back to OC, then LAX. If someone is flying from OC/LA to Berkeley, just within California, then they could fly to SFO, or to Oakland Airport, which is more convenient to Berkeley. (Berkeley is ~7-hour drive, or 1-hour flight from OC.)

There's quite a few direct flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to the big cities in Europe, so it's pretty feasible to fly directly. Also (as I found when booking a trip to the middle east) it isn't so hard to get all of your layovers in the US (New York, Chicago, Atlanta have big international hubs). I don't travel much, so I didn't want to be stuck in Zurich for 7 hours.

On the Europe side, just about every country has it's own big airport, so I don't think there's a "usual" way people fly in/out of Europe. I've heard a lot of people take the train once they're on the ground, to go from country to country, rather than fly from place to place. If they're going for the whole summer, I'd think that would be a nicer way to travel.

So they went straight to LAX, perfect. And that tidbit of going through train, totally helped. It's those small details that help a story and since I haven't left my city except for Nazca, well, thanks. *g* Really. Thanks a lot. *bounces*
