Jezz...I had to read this 2x to make sure it was you, 'Ears :). That's brillient! It actually helps several areas I've had problems with, and introduces a few things I didn't think about; like the mutations of the zos. That HAS to happen. Look what happen with dogs. From the tiny to the huge.
Why? Not expect me to be intelligent? :D Seriously only think I'd point out that dogs are not mutations, but deliberately breed for certain traits. That being said; mutations still happen. But it would be in mutts not pure breeds as the mutation might not be a desirable trait and thus not breed into that breed.
Complete loss of Human Information is a bit cliche, and usually handled badly.
The fact is, modern humanity wouldn't -survive-, let alone -climb quickly back- from a major information loss. No matter how it happens, the major problem will be the lack of support system for the populace, and when mass starvation starts, it's going to spiral downward very fast.
The ones with the kind of skills that wouöd let them survive without modern (or post-modern) technology are not the ones who could figure out how to make it work again, and despite what scifi has people believe, no machinery just stay perfectly usable for latter generations to just 'flip the switch'. That's similar foolishness as the ever-burning torches in old underground complexes buried for few millenia.
Aye, I agree with you. Modern humans wouldn't know what to do, without their cell phones, and video games, as well as more basic stuff. This has been taken into account from some government studies I read about. The U.S. government has done studies in which global warming has gone haywire for example and mass wars break out; including possible nuke. Or the more interesting study of interstellar attacks. That one I won't touch :) but it's still an interesting concept

Been thinking thois through still. I have several thoughts going on with this, but there's a big 'Warning!' in my mind about the effects of civilizational collapse
