Windows - bah....Dell - go fish

I am just starting to fix a friend's computer. They dropped it off at 3pm EST, and just NOW at 10pm I'm able to start using it.

First, the problem:

1. Dell Dimension 2400 system. Oldish yes. but know what? The more I service Dell systems, the more I'm glad I build my own. Talk about cheap, No CPU fan, instead the input fan blows air from a funnel to

I've heard good and bad about HP, so it's probably the MB everyone's complaining about (like yours). Case is very important. If the system isn't cool enough, then it'll burn up. After loosing 2 processors due to overheating, I'm sort of sensitive to the whole thing. (Note I don't overclock, in fact, I tend to underclock).

I'm glad to hear your doing well with yours :). The only thing I don't like with my main system,is the silly cosmetic stuff you never see, since it's below the desk Lights, decals, and useless gadges. But I got a good buy, so I don't complain.

I don't know if you'll get 2 gigs in it, if it only has two slots for ram and according to Dell's site, it only supports 512 meg sticks, and also need DDR2100 or 2700 (266-333) memory speed, so could be a bit hard to find.

Yeah that's true. I told my friend after I returned it, so he'll do something I hope. He's talking now about having me build him one.

Waiting for his tax refund though. We'll see. If I do, I'll build him a good machine.

Arn't we invaluable? :). I'm glad SOMEONE listens to us hackers. So many of my clients don't listen when I say do NOT take out the AV, the firewall, etc. Don't use IE, Don't use outlook express.

Got to love these folks though. $50 a crack at cleaning out the system helps pay bills ;)
