Keeping hope alive, for Galveston

Sep 13, 2008 09:49

Hoping everyone will come out of Galveston, safe and secure. Buildings can be replaced, lives can't. Lets also hope this isn't a repeat of the 1900 storm that slammed it, causing 12,000 dead, and caused 30 million in property damage (no idea what that translates to today's $$) (Source: CNN)

well, way back when, when I took Texas history in seventh grade while living down there, they went into detail about the preparations Galveston has made since then. Really, they've been through several hurricanes since then without truly major loss of life as folks there know to board up and get out quickly since there's only one multi-lane bridge and one ferry off the isle and the ferry goes to the bolivar peninsula which isn't much better as a place for riding out a hurricane (folks' home is 'bout an hour down the coast from Galveston, though about 10 miles inland). Considering that JSC is on the other side of Galveston Bay, I'm wondering how much damage NASA took from the hurricane.

Thank goodness, they came though this without much problem. Although I did hear on NBC's nightly news about some really nasty problems even today. Thanks for the history lesson. It always helps to have a local guide you :)

Its not pretty, but I don't think we'll have anywhere
near the 1900 storm in fatalities. Lots of cleanup
though.

Won't be like Katrina, I give them a year and they'll
be right as...rain?

DOH!

I've been hearing that there is lots of suffering still going on there. Also I heard they did a mandatory evacuation which helped to keep the deaths down considerably. But it won't be like Katrina? That I'm not so sure of :\
