The Final Farewell

She stood at the edge of the crater, and it felt as if something was clenching her heart. More than anywhere else, Sunnydale had been her home. Even though she hadn’t been there for very long, she’d made friends, something she’d never thought would be possible.
She’d felt as if she belonged, as if she mattered.
With a heavy sigh, she closed her eyes. “I should ‘ave been ‘ere,” she said.
“Why?” the tall blonde on her right asked.
“Because it was me place.”
“I was there,” the younger blonde behind her reminded. “It was horrible.”
She opened her eyes and turned to face her companions. “But I was a Slayer. I should ‘ave been at their side.”
The quiet dark-haired woman smiled sadly. “If I could have, I would have been there. All of us would have. Watching our loved ones going into battle, knowing it might be their last…” She broke off, her words catching on the sob that suddenly sprang up in her throat.
“The bus is leaving,” the pretty one mentioned.
She looked around and realized that the rest had already climbed back onboard. She sighed, and nodded. “Then it is time.”
“I’m afraid it is, Kendra, dear,” Joyce commiserated, sliding an arm around the young Slayer’s shoulders.
“Will they really forget us?” Amanda asked, emotion edging her voice.
“Not in their hearts, dear,” Jenny answered, taking her hand.
Tara stood silent, watching the bus carrying Willow and her friends away to start a new life.
