Camp Out?

Dec 27, 2010 12:07

My best friend is really bizarre and loves to camp out for events (Black Friday, movie releases, concerts, stuff like that). I have never camped out for anything before (I've never slept in a tent period). She wants us to camp out for something (she doesn't even know what-she just wants to). Do they let you at Comic Con? And if so, how does it work ( Read more... )

I camped out two years ago for Hall H. It wasn't too bad. We were with people that got there and spent two nights, but we were only there for 1. A lot of people had tents, blow up air mattresses, etc. I definitely recommend bringing things to do, lots of water and if you can, one of those giant umbrellas for shade!

My friend and I showed up at like 2am one day for Ballroom 20 and we weren't even the first ones there. Bring a blanket or something. It got kinda chilly.

Not quite the kind of camping out that you're talking about, but this looks seriously cool!

People do camp out, but keep a few things in mind: being the first in line because you're camping does NOT mean that you'll get the very first row. The Con always lets in handicap and corporate people (studio execs, press people, etc) in first, and they often claim the first five rows or so... I've been arguing with SDCC abou this for two years now, trying to force them to change this policy, but they don't seem to care much about 'fairness'.

Also, despite being in southern Cali, weather isn't always great... last year it was really cold and chilly, and it's usually pretty chilly at night, so be sure to have warm sleeping bags or blankets.

And, finally, it sounds like your friend is a big fan of camping for the sake of camping, not caring WHAT she's camping for... a lot of people who camp at SDCC are diehard fanatics. I'm thinking mostly ofo the Twihards, who are crazy in ways that people who camp for concerts and movie releases cannot begin to understand.

Good luck!

Unless they change things this year, keep in mind that if you camp out for Ballroom 20, again that doesn't mean you'll actually be first in the room. Once you get inside you have to make your way upstairs and then get into another line for BR20. Obviously it helps if you're there bright and early but it's never a guarantee. Plus I think the line for Ballroom 20 was also the line to just get into the convention center.
