Hobbes update

Sep 07, 2009 16:29

Hobbes is still hanging on, but he's pretty miserable. He won't eat or drink water, and the only thing keeping him hydrated is the subcutaneous fluids. He doesn't move around much, and he won't use the litterbox we put out here for him. Not that he's had any sort of bowel movement or anything-he's peed twice in since friday, and both times it's ( Read more... )

it would eat me up for a few weeks but then i'd get over it. if it's too hard for you to do, get a neighbor to do it or something.

...i thought cats kind of went off into the woods to die or something.

Our cats are indoor only, so his version of going off into the woods is hiding under the bed.

I think you are making the right choice. I wouldn't want any of my cats to suffer through chemo either. I really do think you are making the right choice. And I am so sorry that you have to make it :'( . I love you and Eric and all of your animals so much it makes me cry to even think of one of them leaving us. I'm sorry you are going through this. I am sending all of my love and all of my strength and all of my well wishings to all of your household down there in Texas and only wish you could be here so that I could give you the biggest, tightest hug. I love you. And I love Hobbes. (I remember him and Logan being buddies when we took Logan and me wishing we could have taken them both). Again, so much love to you.

thoughts from debbie (bryan's mom) about hobbes anonymous September 8 2009, 02:15:45 UTC
As you know, we've always had cats (lots of them). 2 of them started going like Hobbes- one (Bear),had liver disease and was 16 and the other, i'm sure you remember Katie, had kidney disease and was 17. They were getting worse like not eating or drinking anymore. I wanted them to be home and with us when they died so I ended up holding them for about 4 days and laying them next to me and I know exactly when their spirits passed. They were so sick at the end, I wasn't sure if I should keep them home or take them to the doctor and help them end it but it was the weekend and they weren't open anyway, so i decided to keep them home. I WOULD NOT DO THAT AGAIN! They suffered too much.At the end Katie let out a meow that seemed to say...Finally,the pain is over! Ever since then I decided that if they were really sick like Bear, Katie or Hobbes, I would have them euthanized. We haven't lost another one yet and I know it would be heartbreaking, but it will be sad when they die anyway. Don't let him suffer. Love you Jen!

if you know that he is ultimately not going to survive, that currently he is in a lot of pain and that if he goes through chemo he will still be in pain just that it would be extended for longer until he passes... then you have to know that by letting him suffer till he dies is only our human reaction to not wanting to feel guilty. so i agree with bryan's mom... i think what's best for him is to give him peace, which i would never say is easy having had witnessed many of my childhood pets put down "midwestern style" and also having had witnessed family make this decision about their children, parents, and selves... it's grieving, but they know in the end they don't hurt anymore.

/so many hugs i'm so sorry jen, for you and hobbes.
