If it was your job to fight for your client or employer, and against the interest of someone else who had someone like you working for them, you would have to work in one of three professions:

1. Law
2. Politics.
3. Criminal Enterprise.

And this is why society hates them.

Usually Sales & Marketing is about touting your own thing rather than spreading lies about the other people's. The specific subset that is most likely to result in mud-slinging is the political one.
