Tortall draws me in more, too, I think. Emelan is *fantastic* in that Tammy was clearly trying to be more inclusive, more respectful of other cultures and very deliberate in creating the Circle religions, adapting the foods and cultures of other peoples. She grew as a writer, from when she wrote Alanna and Daine and even Kel. But I read the Lioness books early enough that I will always love the notion of having sparkly, colourful magic that can start fires or heal with the touch of a hand. :D
