Gah, yes, that was such a clever, cold-blooded move to pull. Absolutely gave me chills when he started staring at that blinking red light ( ... )

Wow, I didn't think anyone was reading my Mentalist posts! But I'm glad they hooked you onto the show, because it really is a lot of fun. Jane is such a fascinating character--such a writhing mass of contradictions, though on the surface he looks so poised and polished.

in any other show, I think it would be a big thing that characters would be commenting on every second episode, instead of this more subtle and significant trait.Yes, yes! It's not an anvil, it's simply left open for the viewer to cogitate on ( ... )

And in support of my argument, some dialogue from 4x11 (which I just watched, even though I have a tonne of schoolwork!) of Lisbon and Jane discussing the afterlife--or lack thereof:

Lisbon: Everybody wants to be remembered.
Jane: Childish vanity.
Lisbon: I want to be remembered!
Jane: And you shall be, fondly. But you won't care about it because when you're dead, you're dead, and until then... There's ice cream.

I loved that whole scene. I said to my sister as we were watching, "I think Jane just sicced Red John on Panzer!" But I didn't know if I was over analyzing until it played out. The follow up episode is equally fascinating as we find out Lisbon's reaction.

Ooh, yes, the follow-up is just as delicious. Have you seen 4x11? Jane is plumbing some very dark depths, there. On one hand, his solution was simple, elegant, and had the added benefit of making someone else feel better. OTOH, wow, that was a shady, awful thing to do!
