When I read the lede there, it almost sounded to me that it was good thing anime *is* destroying American society. When I read the article, apparently it became clear that this was a really weird satirical article, or a really misguided and outdated argument against anime and it commercializing our children.
People are saying, "Think of the children." This is why we must expose our children to good anime such as Fullmetal Alchemist (for example), anything from Miyazaki, and even Dragonball and DBZ (in that order, preferably). When children see some of the best that anime has to offer, they'll enjoy it -- and life -- a lot more.
It's a column in a student newspaper. I can't tell if they have an anime club at U of Oregon, but they've run anime in campus buildings including Mononoke on the big screen, and most importantly, Steven T Brown teaches a class on cyberpunk anime. http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~stb/tokyocyberpunk.html
I think the article is just filler. The guy had to write something (he's the opinions editor) so he picked anime this week. If you look back, there's a column liked this about the NIU anime club in the Northern Star a few years back. The guy came to our club so he could write an article making fun of us.
This guy is just filling column inches. He's a junior in college.
I've heard some BS in my day, but this takes the cake. Lord have mercy.
Talk about not checking your facts before you post. Damn.
Tommy Pickles? Seriously? There is not now nor has there ever been any thing of remote quality on Nickelodeon...as far as animation is concerned. I liked teh Rugrats. I liked Doug. They are no where in the same league as something created by Studio Ghibli or Yuu Watase or Monkey Punch. Potty humor =/= quality.
The 80's were the golden age of American Animation. You just don't get the epic imagination as shows like He-Man, She-Ra, Rainbow Brite, My Little Pony and Transformers. The cartoons these days rely on poop and fart jokes and other gross out tactics to entertain. It's aggravating.
