INTERVIEW: Bruce McDonald (part 1!) (
Ah, it’s always nice to hear that phrase. You know, I think every once in a while all the forces come together and they’re just right. Right time, right place, right guys, just everything kind of works. Partly the architecture of it - the Dirty Beatles, the working class Spinal Tap - maybe the architecture of the characters, they’re very archetypal. It’s just a great love story between these two guys, a deep friendship, and there’s a great chemistry between Callum [Keith Rennie] and Hugh [Dillon]. Just a great natural off-screen chemistry. They had this really intense curiosity, a mutual respect for each other coming from the different worlds -- music and film. )

Ah, I see. You're right that there's very little comedic about it, but of course without being there we don't know if they were joking because they find the idea amusing in a juvenile way, or because they know it's such an ill fit. Definitely in most cases it's the latter, but you never know.
actually, he seems to be arguing that the actors spark... which is utterly fascinating and I think he should expound on that
Definitely interesting from a tinhat perspective, but from the film angle, I'll bet a lot of movies bend their plot to accommodate any verve the actors have. TV does it the most often, being more flexible, but you work with what you got, anywhere. And what they had was a pair of intense guys working out a very interesting friendship. *g*
And yes, I hate those movies, too. But on the other hand, I could see how someone got from there to this as the darker cousin, like the mockumentary connection to Spinal Tap. Flimsy, but not so crazy.

The moral of the story being: you can make a musical out of ANYTHING.

all kidding aside, i love that he, as a director, responded to their intense connection by making his movie into a romance. that's a beautifully open-hearted thing to do, whatever we as slashers might make of it.

I love that he's open to let his "vision" of a film evolve.
