Subcultures: Steam and Loli Comms requests...

Feb 08, 2011 12:08

As you guys know I'm starting my honours year (and a half) this semester. The topic I'm looking at (until it changes because of all the research I've done, natch) is "What is the role of new media in the emergence of Lolita and Steampunk subcultures ( Read more... )

I haven't really found a steam comm on LJ that I feel like really represents the way I see things. Most of them are cosplay and fashion comms, and while I appreciate that aspect of the trend, that's not what I'm here for. However, as far as off LJ sites go:

Sepiachord.com - Categorizes and catalogues steampunk music. Includes reviews, interviews, links and more.

Brass Goggles - A steampunk forum that goes up and down, it looks like.

Steampunk Workshop - An online hub for machinists, tinkerers, steampunk media and more.

The Great Steampunk Debate - This took place last year, but you can still read through the threads. The organizers wanted to see if they could get people who were standing on different sides of the subject to shake hands and talk it out.

The AlternateHistory.com Discussion forums - It's broken up into pre and post 1900, so it's not exclusively steampunk, but there are some interesting conversations there.

Aaaaaaand that doesn't include tumblr. :p Hi, my name is KL and I'm mildly obsessive.

Hey that's exactly why I asked: your obsession is my offsite memory back up <3

And thank you - that's going to give me a good chunk of stuff to start off which will be so helpful. You are filled with rocks, and awesome!

Glad to be of some use! Honestly, if I had time and money, I would be so far into the steampunk counter culture. But for now I shall just content myself with writing my stories an watching other people do amazing things. ♥

Yeah, that's part of my whole studying it thing! I don't have the time or cash to costume up properly but oh boy do I want an Edwardian walking costume.

Plus, I don't really do corsets...

Well, been ages and ages since I've done cultural studies, so I'm of no help with links. But that does sound like an interesting topic. Though, is Lolita and Steampunk related? I'm really not that familiar with them. If not, how are you going to structure the thesis?

I'm at the early stages so I'm still working it all out and I've got a decent supervisor and so many references from when I was studying (I kept my texts and my notes and e'thing).

I'm actually going to use the two subcultures to compare - because they both emerged into the western zeitgeist in the past three years, because they both are about costume and defining their own culture through conversations on the internet, because they're global, because I have access ;)

I think if you ask me how I'm going to structure it in a month you're going to get a completely different answer ;)
