Vet visits and adorable boys

I took Sam (the cat) to the vet today for his yearly innoculation as well as his first senior cat’izen check-up. He’s doing very well, except his kidney values are a little on the high side, so he’s gonna have to eat old cats’ food from now on. They reassured me it was nothing to worry about and he doesn’t need a special kidney diet, but since I ( Read more... )

Aw, Sam is a geezer-cat too? How old is he?

Sam was suitably impressed with the proceedings and managed to crawl and claw his way up to sit in my neck twice (apparently the safest place he could think of to get away from the vet who was tugging on his ears and sticking him with needles and whatnot).

Heh, mine do the exact same thing. Save for Spitha, who hisses and spits at everything that moves in the vet's office. He calls her the green-eyed monster by now.

He should be about nine now, so he's still a bit on the low side of geezerdom. Assuming they guestimated his age correctly when he was brought in at the shelter with his broken hip, several years ago.

My vet offers to give the cats a senior check-up around the age of eight, so I thought this year would be a good time to do so. It's basically an extended examination, including blood and urine tests (ever tried to get a cat to pee on a litterbox filled with plastic pellets instead of absorbing material??). And the poor thing now has a shaved bald spot on his chest where they drew blood. Though they complimented me on how well-behaved he was during the procedure (as if anyone can influence cat behavior!).

I've been testing Garfield's urine for years now at home. I stalk him until he goes to his box, then shove a flat plastic container under his behind and collect the sample.

I've had my fingers peed on a couple of times, but it usually works well for noth of us.

What? No... really? That's hilarious! But I fear I'd confuse Sam even more if I stalked him with a plastic container than with the plastic pellets in his litterbox (not to mention he's got one of those litterboxes with a top).

In the past, I used aquarium sand, which I actually think works better. It's heavier, so gives him something to really dig around in.

But hopefully, I won't have to do it again any time soon...
