I assume the animal hospital is just taking care of the pet, and there's not actual health problems? I hope so. Poor kitties away from their mommies (and poor mommies away from their kitties, for the matter).
And I do understand about missing the cat. I still miss the one I grew up with. Even when I lived at home, a few days away, it felt like someone important was missing.
Since I was 8, I lived cat-less for about six months, when I moved out after my academy graduation. Although there's a certain freedom in it, as you described, it is so unspeakably lonely! Things don't co bam (or crash) in the night, There's no layer of cat fur on everything, no cat litter in your shoes, and inanimate objects stay where you put them.
That's not life. That is, for me, the the seventh circle of hell.
