“You sweet on her?” the skinny cashier demanded. He had Adari-gold skin and straight black hair that drank in the light and a rather unhealthy amount of suspicion in his dark brown eyes.
Meld felt himself smiling despite himself as he looked over the top of a low bookcase to where Sear was carefully shelving music and books with the usual scowl she wore when things got tedious. He had suggested to her once that a bookstore might not be the best place to work.
He shrugged at his team member’s coworker and slid his book across the desk. “No.”
“Uh-huh.” Disbelief colored the cashier’s voice, but he went ahead and rang up the book on his register and, when paid, issued a receipt.
Meld shot Sear an amused look when he took the bag.
She glanced at him-seared him, then laughed at whatever she saw.
Never mind it hurt a bit to have her look at his intentions. Meld couldn’t even imagine falling in love with someone as rough and protective and raw as Sear, but he did love her. Platonically. She was his teammate.
