Suikoden Tierkreis, Part 18

Good afternoon, ladies, gentlemen, and assorted others. I'm Lady Nighteyes, and this is "Let's Play Suikoden Tierkreis!" Last time I did a bit of recruiting while avoiding the jobs people actually asked me to do; this time, I get my lazy butt back on plot-track.

I will give full credit to this game for its gender parity. It's become increasingly important to me in the media I consume and I'm too often disappointed, so fair play to Tierkreis for getting that right. Now if only it could've gotten the story right, too. There's so much that's good about the game, but when the theme of the whole plot of an RPG is broken, it's a pretty huge problem.

On the other hand, "Grrr." "..." "???" are not the most amazing lines of dialogue ever written...

Oh, I remember Lazdaa Fortress a lot! For some reason. Do you go back there ever? Because for some reason it's really stuck in my mind.

What the heck is a hayseed. I get the intended meaning, but it's new on me. Was the localiser going out of their way to avoid saying "hick" or something? Still, go Roberto for getting some good out of Sieg.

I don't find the plot of the game as objectionable as you do, I think. It has a number of gaping holes and things that make no sense, but I've seen worse, as well as preachier. There are parts of the plot that need revised, the dialogue is poorly-written in a lot of places (I'm sure some of this is probably the translation, but I don't know how much), the inexplicable insistence on not using any profanity more severe than "darn" completely ruins the tone in a few places, there really needs to be an option to turn off the voice-acting, and Sieg could use a maturity injection, stat, yes. But for me that just makes it impossible for me to take seriously, rather than making me dislike it.

There are several more events at Ladzaa. That is all I will say.

I've heard it before, but it's not exactly common. It wouldn't even be that weird if he'd only used it once and gone for "hick" the other time. Who the hell knows what the translators were thinking.

Some of my gripes are almost certainly localisation... or things that could have been fixed in localisation. But essentially if you don't like a game's message from the get-go and you don't like its hero from the get-go, it's never going to wow you that much, no matter what else it does right. I don't know if I'd say I dislike it, but I've never felt a desire to replay it. Which is part of why I appreciate this playthrough, as it means I can enjoy what's good about the game without having to put work into it myself...

Video games, anime and manga all get pretty bad with the "skimpy women" thing. Part of why I love the Fire Emblem series where we get female generals in "iron wall" armor. XD

It's funny to listen to Cougar since he sounds so nice and friendly... and then the same guy goes and plays Conon. Dat difference.
