Your first person POV is not awkward, at all. That is a peeve of mine, when people write in first person and obviously have no idea how to. Also Sammy may not sound exactly 10, but he's definitely under 13. Maybe just a mature for his age, 10 year old. This sounds like the beginning of a coming of age story.

I think the main issue with you writing a child, is maybe you don't read a lot of YA fiction? Possiby? If that's the case, and you want some recs, I can throw several at you.

Either way, this isn't as horrible as you think it is. It's not really your style, but I think it's a well written piece, with a good story. :)

Thanks! I'm relieved that it has some redeeming qualities, at least. XD I agree with you that first person POV is difficult to write and that most people should just stay away from it (including me!). And you're right, I don't read much YA. The closest I've gotten recently is The Good Thief, which they say is YA (but I'm not actually convinced that it is), and Harry Potter, I guess, which stops being YA at some point anyway. So! Yes, please, rec away! :D If there's one thing I endorse, it's research. XD
